Child care is both hard to find and increasingly expensive for families. The average price of licensed child care for a U.S. family is nearly $11,000 per year, which is 33 percent of the median household income for single-parent families.
The inflation rate is cooling, providing a respite for workers. Yet there’s a reason why many are still unhappy with the economy: from health care to housing to childcare, life in the US is more unaffordable than ever.
The US lacks the most basic policies and infrastructure to support parents like me — and mothers bear the worst of it. At a time when we should be overjoyed at the life we’ve brought into the world, we feel anger at a system that’s hostile to us.
